From Our Chairman Clive Sheldon QC

As 2019 comes to a close, it is fair to say we have lived through a year of political uncertainties and large-scale shifts. As we digest the results of the general election here in the UK and consider what Israel going to the polls again in March 2020 might bring, it is clear to me that this is the time for civil society to step up.

It is why I am proud of the role we play, as NIF UK, in defending and strengthening Israel’s democracy.

This year, we have seen Israelis of every background working together to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy. With your support, we have been investing in these individuals and their organisations who are paving the way for a more hopeful future. We have been making sure that all Israeli voices are heard because we know that a vibrant and resilient civil society is essential for Israel’s democratic future.

Despite political gridlock, we have seen a growing number of Jewish-Arab partnerships whether speaking up for minority rights, standing up against violence against women or working to ensure all citizens have better access to healthcare. We have seen a broad coalition join with the Ethiopian Israeli community in their struggles against police brutality and growing numbers working to challenge extremism and voices of division. These are the actions that give us hope. These are the preconditions for change.

That is why, as the election noise in Israel starts ramping up again, our core commitments and key programmes will not change. With your support, and together with our partners, we can continue to work on behalf of Israel’s democracy, human rights, equality and social justice. And we will continue to invest in the efforts to protect Israel’s democratic norms and practices.

Thank you for being part of our growing community.

Chanukah Sameach and a very Happy New Year

Clive Sheldon QC, Chair, New Israel Fund UK
