From Our Chief Executive: January 2020

As we kickstart the new calendar year, I would like to take a moment to thank you for your support, commitment and dedication to our work. Together, we’ve built a dynamic partnership that has empowered Israel’s change-makers and civil society leaders to defend the rights of minorities and fight injustices of all kinds. We have many achievements to celebrate over the last year from our practical attainments in improving health care for all residents of the Galilee, cracking the housing shortage and ensuring better services for Bedouin villages, to our work standing up to hate crimes and extremism and attempts at voter suppression witnessed in both elections. 2019 also saw NIF launch a series of exciting new initiatives in Israel that will help to train the next generation of civil society leaders and provide them with the skills and resources to succeed.

In the coming year, NIF will continue to support the individuals and organizations tackling Israel’s most intractable issues head on. We will:

  • Build Jewish-Arab partnerships to bridge social gaps and work toward a shared future
  • Stand with those defending Israel’s proud democratic tradition
  • Advance religious freedom by pushing back against the monopoly on Jewish life
  • Support human rights organizations keeping the occupation on the public agenda

In short, we stand for nothing less than Israel’s democratic future.

Through the uncertainty and political turmoil of the last year, what is crystal clear is the important role the civil society plays in promoting rights, democracy, equality and transparency. As we look ahead to what 2020 may bring – thanks to your support – the New Israel Fund is well placed to help address the key issues.
