From Sophie Ablett NIF Fellow 2019

Sophie Ablett is one of our three 2019-2020 New Israel Fund fellows. An actor and producer, Sophie’s projects have a strong activist thread, with her latest show tackling gender equality and women’s rights. She has explored these and other vital issues throughout the Fellowship programme.

‘The space NIF creates for progressive civil society feels like it has become more urgent than ever, as the organisations it supports the battle against both entrenched issues and new challenges that spring up each day. Within the context of such uncertainty in Israel, the way that NIF’s work is led by clear and unwavering values is hugely valuable and creates a strong, positive and progressive space.’

The NIF study tour was such a valuable trip. Between meeting so many NIF grantees and NIF staff members, I feel like I’ve come away with a comprehensive insight into how NIF impacts civil society in Israel. For me personally, it was hugely invigorating to meet so many inspiring women; their attitudes, positivity and energy are values I hope to emulate through the fellowship and beyond.’

The Fellowship is a unique programme in the British Jewish community, partnering with participants from around the world on a nine-day study tour in Israel and the West Bank. Here fellows are given the opportunity to explore issues of equality, justice and democracy in Israel. They then continue their training back in the UK through bespoke projects, campaigns and collaborations.

Applications for the 2020-2021 Fellowship are now open, with our exclusive study trip to Israel running 7-15 July. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
