Zazim can point to a number of impressive recent wins in the arena of social and political change, many of which became national news.

  • Zazim hit headlines for trying to support and actively enable Bedouin citizens of Israel to reach polling stations and realise their voting rights.
  • Zazim successfully launched and staffed an Arabic-language volunteer hotline in the Israeli September elections to counter voter suppression and provide legal counselling (alongside NIF grantee Adala)
  • Zazim continues to campaign against the threat of deportation for children of economic immigrants to Israel. The organisation was deeply involved in the successful anti-deportation campaign of 2018 that changed public opinion.

In the shrinking space of Israeli civil society, and in light of recent assaults of democracy both at home and in Israel, Raluca will address the urgent challenges facing Israelis and Palestinians today.

On the eve of elections in the UK Raluca and Daniel will also analyse the similarities and differences between the political situation here and in Israel and ask what learnings we can glean and take forward.

Zazim is part of the global OPEN campaigning network alongside organisations such as MoveOn in the US and 38Degrees in the UK.

Raluca Ganea:

Raluca is a campaigner and strategic adviser. Among other things, she worked for several years with the global campaigning organization Avaaz.org, gaining valuable experience in managing social-political campaigns. Raluca holds a BA in political science and philosophy from Tel Aviv University and is an Iyengar Yoga instructor.

Around the time of our own elections at home and in light of Israel’s uncertain democratic future, Raluca is joining us at a fascinating and difficult moment.

Daniel Levy:

Daniel Levy is the President of the U.S. / Middle East Project. From 2012 to 2016, he was Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Prior to that he was a senior Fellow and Director of the New America Foundation’s Middle East Taskforce in Washington DC and a Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation. Earlier he worked as an analyst for the International Crisis Group’s Middle East Programme.

Daniel Levy was a Senior Advisor in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and to Justice Minister Yossi Beilin during the Government of Ehud Barak (1999-2001). He was a member of the official Israeli delegation to the Israel/ Palestine peace talks at Taba under Barak and at Oslo B under Yitzhak Rabin (1994-95), as well as being lead drafter of the model peace agreement (“Geneva Initiative”).
