Power, Ethics, and Equality: Mikhael Manekin in conversation with Alona Ferber
Dear Friend,
Join us for an evening with Israeli activist, author, and thought-leader Mikhael Manekin, in conversation with journalist Alona Ferber on Sunday 16th June at 7:30 pm. The event will be held in NW8, tickets are £12/6 concessions.
Their conversation will explore themes of religious extremism and nationalism, ethical conduct in a time of war and Occupation, Arab-Jewish leadership, and finding a path forward.
Mikhael stated in a recent podcast for Jewish Currents: “Sometimes we confuse vulnerability with powerlessness, and Israelis and Jews still have a lot of power. The question about how you grapple with that ethically is really challenging.”
A Fellow at Harvard University, Mikhael Manekin is also the Director of NIF grantee, the Alliance Fellowship, an Arab-Jewish Israeli political network and training programme that works with both established and emerging progressive leaders in Israel.
Last year, Mikhael was awarded an NIF’s Human Rights Award for his tireless work defending democracy, advancing interfaith relations, and working towards the end of the Occupation.
His book, End of Days, was also released last year.
In his words, this is a book about, “Power and Jewish ethical traditions, from the perspective of an Anti-Occupation Orthodox Jew.[ ] Power doesn’t mean we’re not sometimes incredibly vulnerable… sometimes we confuse vulnerability with powerlessness.”
Alona Ferber is the newly appointed senior editor at Prospect Magazine, a monthly current affairs magazine edited by Alan Rusbridger. She writes on politics and policy, specialising in coverage of Israel and Palestine. During her career, she has interviewed major public figures such as Tony Blair and Sheryl Sandberg. She also has a newsletter, The Backlash, where she writes weekly on the struggle for gender equality.
We are also holding an alternative event for the Hebrew speakers among us, on Monday 17th June at 6pm. Join our Israeli staff members for a pint in Camden and what promises to be a riveting conversation with Mikhael Manekin. Register here for our Hebrew speakers’ event.
We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a highly interesting encounter with one of Israel’s most remarkable thinkers and leaders.
Refreshments will be served.
Warm wishes,
Atira Winchester
