Course Overview:
Session 1: Occupation 101 🗓 Monday 16 June | 6:30–8:00 PM (UK)
Background on the occupation and the origins of differing rules and standards. In this session, we will break down terms like ‘Area C’, ‘Hilltop Youth’, and more. We will explore the mechanisms that sustain the system.
Session 2: South Hebron Hills – A Case Study 🗓 Monday 23 June | 6:30–8:00 PM
A closer look at how military control plays out in daily life and the tension with Jewish settlers. We’ll focus on the region of Massafer Yatta, with insights from a Palestinian resident who will share their lived experience. We will be joined by Nasser Nawaj’ah, a researcher for B’Tselem and an internationally recognised human rights activist. In 2023, he was awarded the NIF US Truth to Power Award.
Session 3: Look Inside East Jerusalem 🗓 Monday 30 June | 6:30–8:00 PM
Exploring the legal and social status of East Jerusalem Palestinians — permanent residents, but not citizens — and what this tells us about Israeli democracy today. Includes a guest speaker from East Jerusalem. A Palestinian resident of Jerusalem will join us.
Becca Strober was most recently a senior director at the Israeli organisation Breaking the Silence, where they also worked as the Director of Education. They were an Educational Coordinator at the organisation Sadaka-Reut between 2016 and 2018. Becca is a co-founder of Midreshet Dror (Freedom School) for this generation of young organisers and community leaders. They have also co-created and run two dozen seminars for Israeli educators, students, and Jewish communities. In a moment when biased and inaccurate information is easily spread online and in person, they bring clear, well-sourced information and quality in-depth education to Jewish and Israeli communities so that we can all work towards a just, dignified, and equal future for Israelis and Palestinians.
