OUR DECISION TO NO LONGER ENDORSE THE EVENT ON SUNDAY 10 MAY
Following several distressing attacks on the Jewish community in March and April, as an organisation we felt the profound fear and anguish being experienced across much of the community where many of our supporters are based. We felt compelled to stand alongside the broad range of organisations coming together to respond to this deeply worrying period of antisemitic attacks.
The decision to no longer endorse and promote the event is about New Israel Fund, our supporters, our communal relationships, and our responsibility to maintain trust in our work with Palestinian and Muslim partners.
Our previous decision to be involved followed reassurances regarding the tone, messaging and speakers at the event.
Those reassurances included that the event would be civil and constructive in tone, and rooted primarily in communal voices joined on stage by a limited number of faith and civil society allies, rather than becoming party-political in character.
Following the attack in Golders Green, and amid the rapidly evolving national focus on antisemitism and attacks targeting Jewish people, changes were made to the format and platform of the event, including the decision to invite multiple party leaders to speak.
Taken together with incidents at impromptu protests in Golders Green and Temple Fortune, and increasingly divisive rhetoric online in recent days, these developments undermined our confidence in the previous reassurances regarding the tone, messaging and speakers at the event.
We sincerely hope our concerns will not be realised and that the event will still serve as a powerful coming together of many people in opposition to antisemitism. Some members of our team may still attend in a personal capacity.
We remain fully committed to working alongside others to confront anti-Jewish racism and keep our communities safe, in line with the values we strive to uphold.
