NIF is bringing together Israel’s most passionate defenders of democracy – from every corner of society to push back against attacks on democratic values. Through innovative media strategies, powerful storytelling, and grassroots organising, we’re building a movement that connects people across different communities. 

The programme focuses on: 

• Safeguarding democratic institutions and processes to ensure public participation and transparency.  
• Preserving freedom of speech and expression  
• Reminding Israelis of the human, social, and economic cost of the occupation. 

It’s Time | הגיע הזמן | أجا الوقت 
The Time Is Now movement is a coalition of 60 Israeli organisations, united by a mission to break the cycle of violence and chart a path to lasting peace. They are working to reshape how Israelis think about conflict and reconciliation. 

In July, 6,000 people gathered for their launch event, demanding an end to war, a return of the hostages, and a diplomatic solution that recognises humanity on all sides – sending a powerful message of hope.  

Mickey Gitzin, Executive Director of the New Israel Fund in Israel, stated: “This isn’t just another protest. This is a reimagining of what’s possible – transforming pain into possibility, division into dialogue, and conflict into understanding.”

The People’s Peace Journey, was a six-day ride across Israel this December, which demonstrated that the peace camp is far broader and more diverse than public perception suggests. 

NIF is supporting plans for The People’s Peace Summit. which will take place in May 2025 and will be the third major milestone of the coalition. 

Critical Threats on Democracy 

The resumption of war in Mid-March, coupled with the return of extreme-right minister Itamar Ben Gvir to the government, has had dire consequences. Tens of thousands of Israelis have been protesting across the country fighting against the government’s growing attacks on democracy and calling for a ceasefire alongside a hostage deal.  

Together, we will continue to protect democracy, fight misinformation and create real hope for a just future.

Earlier in the year, NIF supported the Union of Journalists with an emergency grant to fight the government’s measures to limit the independence and threaten free media in Israel.
