Democracy without Dialogue?
Support Israelis standing up for democracy TODAY!
A number of right wing politicians cancelled their participation this week in the Haaretz Conference on Democracy ostensibly because of NIF’s participation. Below is the two-page full-spread ad that Haaretz ran today in response.
Here’s a translation:
They already offered their interpretation of democracy
Minister Naftali Bennett and Knesset Members Zeev Elkin, Gila Gamliel, Aryeh Deri, Tzahi Hanegbi, Tzipi Hotovely, and Ayelet Shaked cancelled their appearances at the Haaretz Conference on Democracy because the conference is co-sponsored by the New Israel Fund. The democracy of the boycotters disregards the weak, the marginalised, those deprived of rights, those facing economic discrimination, and those excluded because of their beliefs.
To Israel’s great credit, the New Israel Fund exists — an organisation that understands that democracy also means defending the rights of minorities, and extends a hand especially to the weak, excluded and discriminated against, and that supports organisations concerned with their rights. This is important work that politicians on the right and Aryeh Deri (protector of the voiceless) cannot tolerate.
